Digital Privacy Tools and Services

Privacy at Cornell University Library

Protecting patron privacy is a core value of libraries, because privacy is fundamental to intellectual, creative, and political freedom. Intellectual innovation depend on our ability to seek information and experiment with ideas in an environment free from surveillance and scrutiny.

In a digital, interconnected environment, privacy is subject to new threats and complicated challenges. CU Library offers various opportunities to learn about the digital privacy landscape, and concrete strategies for assessing your risk and increasing your digital privacy.

Resource Guide

The Library maintaints a Resource Guide to Digital Privacy and Security. It contains links to the resources discussed in Digital Privacy Workshops in the CoLab (see below).

Privacy Drop-in Hours

Spring Semester 2018: Wednesdays 3-4pm in the Digital CoLab (Olin Library 701)

Drop in to ask questions or get help with your privacy tools.

Common questions:

  • I installed a password manager (like LastPass), but it's acting strangely and I need help getting it to work correctly on my device.
  • I've been seeing advertisements for VPNs. Should I get one? How do I know if I'm getting a good one?
  • I'm traveling out of the U.S. Should I be concerned about border agents searching my devices when I come back?
  • I'm researching a sensitive topic online and want to protect my identity. What are some steps I can take?
  • I'm concerned about being targeted for online harrassment because of the views I express. What are steps I can take to help protect myself?
  • Bring us YOUR questions!

If Wednesdays aren't good for you, make an appointment to discuss your privacy questions anytime! Contact Digital Humanities Librarian Eliza Bettinger (ecb4) to set up a time.
